Other Surgical Techniques for Liposuction
The most popular weight loss surgeries today minimally invasive techniques or liposuction. Liposuction is the procedure that removes fat from the body through suction process and needs a very small incision. The technique has gained worldwide popularity due to its immediate and dramatic results. It can remove fat from various areas of the body like abdomen, face, thighs, back etc.
Other than liposuction there are some other surgical procedures that can help in weight loss. They are called bariatric surgical procedures. These surgical procedures work by either restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold or by causing malabsorption of nutrients. Sometimes a combination of both gastric restriction and malabsorption is done to get the desired results.
The most important point of consideration for any person who wants to undergo bariatric procedures is hormonal changes.
Bariatric surgery is of following types:
- Gastric bypass surgery is the laparoscopic procedure that reduces the volume of the stomach, and restricts food intake by reducing hunger to promote healthy weight loss.
- Sleeve gastrectomy cut the stomach short so that patient eats less amount of food. This will lead to significant loss of patients weight.
- Adjustable gastric band restricts the intake of food by placing a silicone gastric band with an inflatable inner collar around the upper stomach. This will eventually delay the emptying of food. So the patient will feel fuller for longer time and will eat less leading to weight loss.
- Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch is a procedure that involves two steps. First, a portion of stomach is removed to create a smaller, tubular stomach pouch. Then, a large portion of the small intestine is bypassed. This will significantly decrease the absorption of calories and nutrients (particularly protein and fat).
