Gynaecomastia is a common condition affecting 20 - 30 % of men causing their chests to enlarge like a woman’s breast. It is commonest among younger boys and older men. People also call it Man Boobs or MOOBS, or Puffy Nipples.
What are the signs of gynecomastia?
Gynaecomastia causes the male chest to enlarge like a woman's breast on both sides or on just one side, it can also manifest as pain and tenderness in these swellings.
What is the cause of gynecomastia?
There are quite a few causes of gynecomastia.
Hormonal imbalance
The sex hormones oestrogen and testosterone determine the sex of a person and an imbalance can result in gynecomastia. Though testosterone is the main hormone in men, sometimes there is an increase in the naturally low levels of oestrogen in men, this can result in gynecomastia.
Newborn male babies
Oestrogen passes to the baby from the mother through the placenta and thus they can be affected with gynecomastia. However, the effect is temporary and wears off after a few weeks of birth.
Obesity
Obesity is among the common causes of gynecomastia. Levels of oestrogen increase in overweight people, causing them to develop breasts. There would also be excess fat tissues enlarging the breast tissues. Losing weight or taking part in exercise might improve the condition in some people.
Puberty
The levels of hormones in the body vary during puberty. Till the levels of testosterone and oestrogen stabilizes in the growing teenager, higher levels of oestrogen can cause pubertal gynaecomastia, this can improve on its own by age 18 to 20, as the levels drop.
Other causes
Among the other causes, the significant ones include illegal drugs like anabolic steroids, side effects of medications, especially anti-ulcer drugs or those for heart diseases, infection in the testicles, health conditions like liver or kidney failure and too much consumption of alcohol.
Treatments for Gynaecomastia
What is the procedure?
The Smart Liposuction Laser is used to melt and suck out the unwanted fatty tissue of the chest, while tightening the skin envelope and reducing bruising. Following the liposuction, the gland is removed through an incision at the nipple. The end result will be a smooth, toned, tight and contoured chest.
How is the recovery process?
The patient is advised to wear a compression garment underneath, the duration of which varies with the patient. The place would be a little sore and tight, much like being punched or having done too many bench presses. The postoperative discomfort is minimal. Daily activities can be resumed within a few days of the procedure. Lifting weights can be done after about 4 weeks.
What is the procedure?
VASER uses ultrasound energy to break down the fat and gland, allowing the gynaecomastia to be treated through tiny incisions. The rest of the process is the same as SmartLipo treatment.
How is the recovery process?
It is similar to SmartLipo recovery.
