Eyelid surgery is also known as blepharoplasty. It is a procedure that can involve the removal of excess fat pads, drooping skin and muscles of the eyelids. Blepharoplasty can either be functional or cosmetic, depending on the needs of the patient. The functional procedure is performed solely due to medical reasons and generally involves removal of the excess upper lid skin that is impairing the patient’s vision.
Cosmetic blepharoplasty is designed to improve the appearance of a person. The muscles weaken through the natural ageing process. The skin stretches and sags. Puffy bags appear under the lower eyelid and the upper eyelids tend to droop.
How is the eyelid surgery performed?
Depending on the nature of the operation, it can be done under either local or general anestheisa. The operation is done through natural skin creases on the lids, which will leave an almost invisible scar. Excess skin, muscle or fat might be removed during the procedure, in the lower lid the excess or sagging fat might be redistributed to cover the tear trough cheek hollow. This surgery can be done as a day surgery.
What are the side effects of eyelid surgery?
Though the side effects are generally rare and mild, the following have been reported in literature:
Only in very rare cases, the patients feel permanent difficulty in closing their eyes during sleeping. Ectropion is another rare complication were the lower eyelid faces outwards and exposes the inner surface of the eyelids. Both of the above problems can be corrected with additional surgery. Symptoms like severe bleeding, chest pain, short breath and vision problems should be reported to your surgeon immediately.
What are the guidelines to follow before and after the surgery?
You would be asked to do the following before surgery:
The guidelines to be followed after the surgery include:
How long would it take to get back into shape?
The period of recovery varies depends on the patient and the procedure performed. However, it would take 2 weeks, in general, to recover from blepharoplasty.
How would you know if you are ideal for the surgery?
You would be a good candidate if you have a good mental and physical health. Also, there should be fat deposits under the eyelids, giving them a puffy look. If the excess skin makes your eyelids sag or droop, the doctor might also recommend the surgery.
It would be a good idea to consult with the surgeon well in advance and discuss your problems.
